Our Story: From Hobby to Heritage

  Skunk Really Works was born from the passion of Franklin Beans, a Minnesota native who began breeding and cataloging cannabis seeds in Michigan in 2015 as a personal project. What started as a hobby quickly grew into a respected craft. Franklin, a marketing major turned plant scientist, has become a recognized name in cannabis breeding. In 2023, he shared his expertise at Startup Week in Minneapolis, discussing the intricate process of cannabis seed creation and the science behind stable genetics.  Franklin’s journey to cannabis breeding is as unique as his seeds. A childhood science fair win, a family garden, and the challenges of breaking into tech in rural Michigan all shaped his path. But it was personal loss that truly inspired him. In 2001, Franklin’s mother passed away from breast cancer, sparking his interest in alternative healing methods, including cannabis. To honor her memory, Franklin set out to create a cannabis strain that carried her legacy. His mother lovingly called him “Franklin,” after the cartoon character Franklin the Turtle, making Franklin Beans the perfect moniker for a breeder specializing in Skunk cannabis seeds.
